What is it about ?
The “Change the Scenario” guidelines provide a framework for creating more inclusive STEM exercises and problems in schools. These guidelines encourage modifying scenarios by changing gender pronouns in leadership roles from "he/him" to "she/her," emphasizing the potential for women in leadership. Additionally, scenarios can be further diversified to include protagonists who are non-heteronormative, disabled, or from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. This approach aims to challenge stereotypes and foster inclusivity, helping students envision a broader range of possibilities within STEM fields.
How to use it ?
When you design STEM exercises or problems, modify the scenario. In exercises or problems featuring men in leadership positions, change the gender pronouns from “he/him” to “she/her” to reflect the possibility of women assuming leadership positions. Apply the same approach to existing exercises by modifying the pronouns to reflect gender inclusivity. To take it a step further, adjust the scenario to feature a protagonist who is non-heteronormative, disabled, or from a lower socioeconomic background as the lead character.
